Anorexia Resources for You
You may know that your teen or young adult may have anorexia. Now, what do we do?
First, we need to make sure the child feels worthy, valued, and heard. Let them know it is ok to feel hopeless. Then you can share how God wants them to be secure and that they are loved unconditionally. Our first goal is to get rid of the fear and insecurity so that they feel safe, healed, healthy, and whole.
We want to start with addressing their psychological needs so that we can eventually have the end result of eating healthy again.
We want to minimize resistance. It is a compulsion, but we need to look at their hearts’ needs. Underlying factors are almost always present: insecurity, low self-esteem, fear, etc.
There is always a heart need. We will always respond better to the person that cares and shows support and helps guide us to get healing. The good news is that the earlier we address it, the more success you will experience.
Second, we need to make sure we get professional help. We need to get them a check-up with their primary doctor to ensure no underlying health issues or uncover the consequences of the lack of nutrition. Then we need to make sure we find a Christian counselor specializing in eating disorders.
Victory can be found from anorexia with God’s provision and love and professional and family care.
